The ABC of M Curió

1937 - Was born on 23rd January in Candeias son of capoeiristas Maria Bispo (Pequena) and José Martins dos Santos (Malvadeza), the Martim da Pemba, and the grandchild of capoeirista Pedro Virício (Curió). Was raised in Santo Amaro.
1943 - Started to learn capoeira with his father and grandfather.
1944 - Ran away from home.
1951 - Started to teach capoeira.
1954 - Is said to appear on the photos of M. Gautherot together with M Waldemar and others.
1968 - On 10th April became part of the CECA of M Pastinha.
1980 - Participated in the event of Frede Abreu called 1° Seminar of Capoeira and festival of Rhythms of Capoeira with M Cobrinha Verde, M Gigante, M João Grande and others.
1982 - On 7th January founded the Escola de Capoeira Angola Irmãos Gêmeos (ECAIG).
1988 - Participated in the event of the Old Guard in Fortaleza with M Waldemar and M Boca Rica. Also visited Floripa with M Bobó and M João Pequeno.
1997 - Recorded his CD A voz viva da capoeira Angola in Mexico (listen above).
2000-2002 - Was ABCA's director.
2016 - Was honoured with the Zumbi dos Palmares medal.
Continues teaching in his academy in the capoeira fort in Santo Antônio Alem de Carmo, Salvador.

About the Old Masters:

«[Besouro's] first contact with the world of capoeira took place with an old african called Alípio, who was a captive in the Pantaleão Mill. When planting sugarcane, the student heard and learned from the old man the teachings of capoeira. Uncle Alípio was a Babalawo [candomblé priest] and had been a slave when young, a son of a black woman who was brought in a ship from the port of São Jorge da Mina in Dahomey [Benin].»

«That time there was a group [in São Braz]: it was me, Messias [M Messias, born in 1929], Zinho, Genesio, Lao, Tomazinho, Jaime, Chumbinho [..] So we had this group of boys who were all 16, 15-16 years old. And we used to get together on Saturdays and Sundays to do this capoeira. And Léo was the mestre.»
