The ABC of M João Pequeno

1917 - Was born on 27th December in Araci, son of Maria Clemença de Jesus and Maximiliano Pereira dos Santos, a cowboy in the Vargem do Canto farm in the Queimadas region.
1932 - Ran away from draught on foot, going to Alagoinhas and later to Mata de São João where he stayed for 10 years working on the sugar cane plantations with oxen.
1932/3 - Started to learn capoeira with M Juvenço (Ferreiro or Gordo).
1942 - At 25 years of age moved to Salvador and started to learn with M Barbosa.
1949 - Started to learn in Bigode with M Pastinha, who right away offered him the treinel position.
1959 - Travelled to Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre with M Pastinha, M Canjiquinha and M Gigante.
1982 - In January participated in an encounter of Old Masters together with M Waldemar, M Canjiquinha, M João Grande, M Gato Preto and M Cobrinha Verde. On 2nd May created the Academy of João Pequeno de Pastinha in the Santo Antônio Além do Carmo fortress.
1984 - Participated in the great event in Rio de Janeiro together with M Waldemar, M Gato Preto, M Canjiquinha and M Paulo dos Anjos.
1988 - Participated in an event of the Palmares grouo in Floripa together with M Bobó and M Curió.
1989 - Participated in the anniversary roda in M Itapoan's event together with M Waldemar, M Gigante, M Paulo dos Anjos and M João Grande. In the same year participated in the recording of M Jelon's CD together with M Bobó and M João Grande.
2000 - Recorded his CD called Capoeira Angola with Alex Muniz (listen above).
2008 - Received the honoris causa doctorate from the Federal University of Bahia.
2011 - Died on the 9th December.

About the Old Masters:

«[Besouro's] first contact with the world of capoeira took place with an old african called Alípio, who was a captive in the Pantaleão Mill. When planting sugarcane, the student heard and learned from the old man the teachings of capoeira. Uncle Alípio was a Babalawo [candomblé priest] and had been a slave when young, a son of a black woman who was brought in a ship from the port of São Jorge da Mina in Dahomey [Benin].»

«That time there was a group [in São Braz]: it was me, Messias [M Messias, born in 1929], Zinho, Genesio, Lao, Tomazinho, Jaime, Chumbinho [..] So we had this group of boys who were all 16, 15-16 years old. And we used to get together on Saturdays and Sundays to do this capoeira. And Léo was the mestre.»
